Topo Analyst is a standalone Windows-based software tool that enables rapid verification and review of LiDAR point cloud data (LAS file format) as well as raster DEM data that may be derived from LiDAR. Topo Analyst can test DEM data without LiDAR data so it is suitable for general elevation data testing.

OS Requirements: Topo Analyst requires Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or more recent releases of Microsoft Windows OS. For Windows 7 systems, some redistribution files may be needed prior to installation. Please see the install notes for further details about installation and configuration.

Dependencies: Topo Analyst requires .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 or higher. The .NET framework and service packs are available without cost via the internet from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.

Minimum System Requirements: A screen resolution of at least 1280 x 1024 is required. System configurations should include a CPU with speed greater than 1 GHz, 1GB or more of system memory, and local, attached, or high performance network storage for data access.

Recommended Configurations: For ideal performance, users should consider multi-processor systems with CPU speeds in excess of 2GHz with 3GB or more of system memory as well as a dedicated graphics card. Typical user configurations may include multiple monitors which can make using Topo Analyst more efficient and effective.

Screen resolutions higher than 1280 x 1024 are recommended and it should be noted that a high resolution monitor and a dedicated graphics card can dramatically enhance performance of elevation data verification and review.

Inputs: Topo Analyst automates the accuracy verification and QA process for elevation data by using input data and interfaces streamlined to support workflows vital to accuracy verification and quality control and assurance of LiDAR data collections. Topo Analyst may also be used to check the accuracy of digital elevation data used for a variety of purposes including ortho-rectification, flood studies, earth works planning, slope stability analysis, infrastructure planning, and many others. Necessary inputs include the following:

  • Tile Index: A shape file is required for the tile index of the tiled LAS data, DEM files, and intensity images. The shape file should be attributed with fields for file names and populated with a file name that corresponds to each polygon in the tile index.
  • LiDAR Data: Tiled LAS data should be organized in a folder, may be in LAS 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 format. There should be a LAS file for each polygon in the tile index.
  • DEM Data: Tiled DEM data should be organized in a folder A folder containing the tiled DEM data and may be in most raster formats and are typically provided as IMG, TIF, or Esri GRID files. There should be a DEM file for each polygon in the tile index. Intensity raster data sets may also be provided and organized in a similar manner.
  • Checkpoints: Surveyed checkpoint data are required in the form of a comma-separated values (CSV) file that contains columns for the checkpoint ID, surveyed X, Y, Z locations, and a column for the land cover type. Typically, land cover name is listed in an abbreviation (BE for bare earth, GR for grass, FOR for forest, URB for urban, SHR for shrub, etc).

Topo Analyst - LiDAR Testing Extension (TA-LTE) provides a software solution for quantitative testing of LiDAR data that delivers automated, standardized, consistent, and simplified accuracy verification and quality assurance. As a plug in to Topo Analyst, it allows you to perform modular testing of LiDAR data across the project life cycle, perform comprehensive testing to verify completeness of coverage of raw uncalibrated flightline data, relative accuracy of calibrated LiDAR swaths, and absolute accuracy and quality of final tiled LAS and DEM products.

The modules of TA-LTE were designed to consider LiDAR data and products across the project life cycle and address questions which follow:

  • Module 1: Have LiDAR data been collected into raw swaths that fully cover the project area, include the required amount of overlap, and provide the needed pulse spacing and density?
  • Module 2: Have LiDAR swaths been calibrated such that the relative accuracy between adjacent swaths in the area of overlap meets requirements?
  • Module 3: Have tiled LiDAR data and derived products been classified, bare earth digital elevation models derived, data accuracies been verified, and other products such as project boundary and tile index shapefiles, breaklines files, and metadata files provided for the project area?
